POET PRAISES PAINTINGS AND CERAMICS

The well-known poet Francis Page performed three poems to celebrate the work of Barry artists Steven Miller and Nicala Hellinger, whose first two-person exhibition was officially opened by Paul Baker, Chair of VOGA (Vale of Glamorgan Artists) on 6th February. The goodly crowd of friends and art lovers at the preview were also entertained by songs and poetry performed by Bryher Davis, Clive Harris (on guitar) and Gethyn Clark.

In their art, both Steven Miller and Nicala Hellinger celebrate the power and beauty of the waters of Wales. Steve Miller wants his paintings, “ . .  to show the beauty of our natural environment, with its cascading waterfalls, lagoons, tidal systems, and standing water”. Nicala Hellinger adds that her ceramics “are meant to represent the strength and force, and also the fun and joy of water in our lives.” Steve’s colourful paintings and Nicala’s richly textures ceramics will be on view at the Travellers Gallery, Barry Station, mornings, Monday to Friday, until 26th March.

The Travellers Café is run by Mind in the Vale of Glamorgan as a work experience setting for people recovering from mental health problems, and the Gallery inside the Café is run in partnership with VOGA (www.voga.org.uk)

PASSIONATE COLOURIST SHOWS AT TRAVELLERS GALLERY, BARRY.

The colour in Hilary Griffiths’ painting is intense and passionate, like the black and white of her photography. Both are currently on view at the Travellers Gallery, Barry Station. Although Hilary uses many techniques, she says, “The vein that runs through my work and unifies it is colour.  I use it instinctively.  Sometimes colour is there to convey an emotion but, conversely, it is often the emotion that is there in the first place that makes me paint using certain colours quite involuntarily.”

Although she completed her training at Winchester School of art as a painter, Hilary is also intrigued by black and white photography, “because of its absolute lack of colour”. This forces her to rely on light and dark, “to express the emotion and meaning I get from colour”.

This lively exhibition has been arranged by Hilary working with Barry-based painter Alan Salisbury, member of the Welsh Group and a founder member of VOGA. The Travellers Café and Gallery is run by Mind in the Vale of Glamorgan as a work experience setting for people recovering from mental health problems. Hilary’s exhibition is open Monday to Friday, 7am to 1pm until Friday 13th November. The deadline for the Gallery’s Open Winter Exhibition is also 13th November, further details from the Gallery or from the website www.mindinthevale.org.uk or by ringing 01446 730792. Young artists show their work

Pupils from Romilly School are showing their artwork at the Travellers Gallery at Barry Station, which is the school’s adopted station. The exhibition, called “These are Our Windows” involved artists Jean Francis and David Button working in collaboration with class teacher Fiona Rodgers and school Art co-ordinator Jane Mullane.  The six year olds created house facades with interiors behind each window and the reception class with Jane Mullane painted and collaged views of the Bristol Channel. The exhibition was officially opened by Jane Hutt, who has also arranged for the work to be shown at the Welsh

assembly after the Travellers Gallery exhibition closes on 14th October. The Travellers Gallery is open Monday to Friday, 7am to 1pm in the Travellers Café which is run by Mind in the Vale of Glamorgan as a work experience setting for people recovering from mental health problems.

Artist Jean Francis is a member of VOGA (Vale of Glamorgan Artists), an artist group whose involvement with the community includes helping Mind in the Vale of Glamorgan to run the exhibition programme at the Travellers Gallery. Other recent community projects by VOGA include a Roman-themed exhibition, with a drawing workshop, at Dyffryn Gardens which was celebrating the centenary of the recently restored Pompeian Garden at Dyffryn’s European Heritage Weekend. VOGA has also provided the current exhibition showing until January 2010 in the Café at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant.

Future plans for the Travellers Gallery include an Open Winter Exhibition. For details, ring 01446 730792 or look on the website www.mindinthevale.org.uk

Charles Byrd show at Travellers Gallery, Barry Station.

Barry ‘boy’ Charles Byrd, aged 92, at his exhibition opened by the Deputy Mayor of Barry, Cllr Karl Kuhnell.

In addition to the large Charles Byrd exhibition in Art Central, a smaller exhibition of his joyful abstract paintings from the 1960’s will be open at the Travellers Gallery, Barry Station, through the summer. Travellers Café and Gallery is run by Mind in the Vale of Glamorgan as a work experience setting for people recovering from mental health problems.

None of the delightful paintings on display have been shown in public before, but they have been prepared for exhibition by his friend Cen Williams who said their glorious colours and lively designs would lift the spirits of everyone who saw them. Cen added that “they will oil the wheels of Mind” by their impact on people who work in and use the Café Gallery. Some visitors will be cheered, some might decide to go to another art exhibition, and some might even take up painting, all inspired by Charles Byrd. Charles then entertained the private view with stories of his early memories of Barry, where he had attended Romilly Road school, where he sang with the famous choir, and where he had never been given the cane! He then offered to donate his painting of Barry Docks to the town.

At the launch Mind in the Vale raised £65 from a combination of sales of a book about the work of Charles Byrd (generously donated and autographed by the artist) and donations. The lavishly illustrated book featuring a range of the artists work is still available for purchase at Travellers Cafe.

The Travellers Café Gallery is open Monday to Friday, 7am to 1pm. The exhibition lasts until Friday 11th September. Future plans include open exhibitions to be announced in the near future. For further information ring 01446 730792 or look on the websiteswww.mindinthevale.org.uk and www.voga.org.uk.
